As a pre-service teacher I have learned that every student has a special quality that he or she brings to a classroom. All students come from different backgrounds and have their own styles of learning. A classroom should foster a diverse environment in which a child is able to share ideas and beliefs in a comfortable, nonjudgmental setting. I believe that in a classroom students need to be comfortable with each other. I feel that through working, listening, and giving feedback to one another, students are best able to learn new information. If my students do not feel comfortable with one another, as a teacher it will be extremely difficult to promote group work. It is essential for my students to understand that every student is different.  I believe that part of my responsibility, as a pre-service teacher is to ensure that all of my students receive the respect they deserve.

Many of my views in teaching have been inspired by my life long experience as a dancer. For instance, I have always felt that the stage is a dancers home. A stage is the place where a dancer feels most comfortable as they interpret the music through body movement. Dancers are extremely diverse. They are performers who learn many different styles, dance to different types of music, wear different costumes, and have to play a different character in each routine. Each dancer tells a story through their performance, trying to make the audience members understand their message. Similarly in a classroom both teachers and students must feel comfortable in their learning environment. If students are at ease and feel at home in the classroom, the teacher will have an easier time getting quality work. If a dancer is not comfortable on stage, there is no way that they would be able to give a top performance.

In my classroom it will be essential for all of my students to respect and get along with one another. In doing so, I feel that it will make the classroom environment a better place to learn, enabling students to perform to the best of their abilities. When the school year first begins I will incorporate group work into many of my lessons. My first few reading assignments will have students independently read a novel and then work together in small groups discussing the main ideas of the book. I will then have them write a group summary about what they have just read. By having them write a summary together it will teach the group about teamwork and to respect others’ opinions and ideas. Once the summary is complete, I will go around to each group and read what they have written. I will give my students feedback, letting them know what they have done well as a team and what they could improve on. After I give my students feedback, the teams will revise their summaries and share their summaries to the other students. Although it is intimidating for many students to come up in front of a class, I feel it is very important. Students need to realize that they are not being judged and that a classroom is a place where their opinions count. By getting my students in front of the class right away, I believe that they will be more comfortable sharing their diverse ideas with their peers.
