Celebrating Differences Through Education by Amanda Gortler

As a pre-service teacher, I believe that diversity in a classroom is very important. All students are different and have their own special qualities to bring to a classroom. As a pre-service teacher, I feel that one of my responsibilities is to promote learning about our differences. By talking about all of our differences the class can fully understand a person and what defines them as an individual. When learning about others, I believe that each of my students needs to respect and try to understand their differences from one another. One of my main goals as a teacher is to teach my students that even though we are all individuals and are different, we are all equal and have the same reason for being in the classroom: to learn and grow.

In my dance studio at the end of every recital the competition teams perform in the finale, which is known as the production dance. The production dance is a themed performance in which each company team does a short routine dancing in the style that suits them best. The order of the production dance goes from the youngest to the oldest dancers, showing how as time goes on the dancers keep learning and growing. Once all of the teams perform as individual groups, the final song in the production dance features all of the competition dancers together as one studio. In a regular classroom all students are diverse; every student has their own learning style, favorite subject, and individual qualities, which makes them unique. We come together with a common goal in wanting to learn. In both cases, school and dance students get to use their individuality and talents, but come together to learn and grow.

In my classroom I will make sure that everyone respects the diversity of my students. For my class to have a better understanding about what diversity is I will have a day called Diversity Day. A week before Diversity Day I will set a time an hour before dismissal where my students will sit on the reading rug in the back of the classroom to have a group discussion about diversity. During this discussion I will have the class break up into small groups comparing different types of music, clothing, art, food, and other characteristics of diversity. On diversity day I will have my students come to class wearing clothing that represents their different backgrounds. They will be ready to discuss what makes them different from others and how it helps make them who they are. By having class diversity day, I think that students will show a greater respect for one another and be more understanding towards each others differences. ~Amanda
