Protecting Your Two Greatest Assets

Protecting Your Two Greatest Assets

“Health and wealth are two of life’s greatest assets. Protect them with patience, gratitude, and wise decisions. Both allow you to enjoy the future you’re creating.” — Bonnie Gortler

Building financial security doesn’t happen overnight. It can take years of saving, investing, and making thoughtful decisions to enjoy life and care for the people we love. Yet we sometimes take our health for granted until something reminds us how precious it truly is.

Recently, I was reminded that health is not something to take for granted. A medical procedure, Mohs surgery, became more complicated than expected, and my recovery required patience, rest, and trust in my healthcare team. It reinforced a lesson that applies to every part of life: paying attention early, asking questions, and communicating openly can make all the difference.

There were moments when I questioned whether I should contact my doctor. I wondered whether I was overreacting or simply needed to give my body more time to heal. Instead of waiting too long and hoping things would improve, I listened to my intuition and reached out. That decision gave me the guidance I needed and reminded me that asking questions and seeking help are signs of wisdom, not weakness. Sometimes, the simplest action is making a phone call. It can make all the difference.

That experience also reminded me of the challenges investors face.

Successful investing isn’t about ignoring problems or hoping they disappear. It’s about monitoring your portfolio, recognizing when conditions change, and making thoughtful adjustments based on a well-defined plan. That same thoughtful approach can also serve us well when caring for our health.

Both health and wealth benefit from simple, consistent habits:

  • Pay attention to small changes before they become bigger concerns.
  • Seek guidance from trusted professionals when you need it.
  • Be patient. Progress often happens one step at a time.
  • Focus on what you can control.
  • Make decisions based on knowledge rather than fear.

“Protecting your health and protecting your wealth both begin with paying attention.” — Bonnie Gortler

Whether you’re building a portfolio or recovering from a health challenge, patience and discipline matter. There will always be circumstances beyond our control, but there is great power in making thoughtful decisions and taking positive action when needed.

As I continue my own recovery, I am especially grateful for my husband, my family, and my medical team. I listened to their instructions to take it easy, stay off my feet, and keep my leg elevated so my body could heal properly. Following their guidance has allowed me to heal and feel better and stronger each day. This experience has reminded me that success is about more than financial goals. It is about having the health and peace of mind to enjoy the life we are creating.

Take care of your investments. Take care of yourself. Both deserve your attention, and both are essential to creating a future filled with confidence, gratitude, and joy.

As I reflected on this experience, I was reminded of a few simple lessons:

  • Listen to your body.
  • Don’t ignore warning signs.
  • Communicate openly with your doctor.
  • Accept help from those who care about you.
  • Be patient with the healing process.
  • Appreciate each day.
  • Remember that both health and wealth are strengthened through thoughtful decisions.

As with investing, don’t rush your recovery because you’re beginning to feel better. If an investment is working, you give it time to develop rather than trying to force results. Healing deserves that same patience. Continue giving yourself the time your body needs, even if you’re eager to return to your full schedule.

Protect your health with the same care and attention you give your investments. Both are among life’s greatest assets, and both deserve your patience, gratitude, and thoughtful decisions. Small choices made consistently over time help create healthier lives, stronger financial futures, and the peace of mind to enjoy them.
