Renewed talk of U.S. tax reform and the good start to earning seasons have pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a new record high on October 24.  However, the Nasdaq, S&P 500, and Russell 2000 were unable to do the same. The market has been in a steady uptrend since late August.  As the rally continues higher, so does investor optimism.  Short term price uptrends and support levels remain intact for the major averages.

Our equity timing model will shift from hold to bullish on November 1. Also unfavorable seasonality is out and favorable seasonality is in.

What to expect now?  The bulls to remain in control:

  • The daily tape action suggests there are no signs of a market top.
  • Overseas markets are in uptrends supporting the U.S. Market.
  • Although the Nasdaq is no longer leading in relative strength compared to the S&P 500, the top holdings Apple (APPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet Inc. Class A (GOOGL), and Facebook all remain above support. These stocks have quickly rebounded after a pullback.
  • High Yield Bonds are at or near their highs.
  • Volatility remains low.
  • Market breadth indicators are positive. The advance/decline line has made new highs.
  • The Russell 2000 (IWM) has been in a very narrow range since the highs made on October 4, not giving up much ground while digesting its gains after breaking out of its weekly channel.

Higher Intermediate Term Upside Objectives Remain For the S&P 500 (SPY)

The chart above is the weekly SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) ETF that is comprised of 500 stocks of the largest companies in the U.S. When you invest in the S&P 500 (SPY), you will get a broad representation of the overall large-cap U.S. stock market.

As of 10/25/17 its top 5 holdings in the S&P 500 were Apple Inc. (AAPL) 3.67%, Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) 2.74%, Facebook (FB) 1.84%, Amazon (AMZN) 1.76%, and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 1.72% totaling   11.73%.  The top part of the chart is the SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) ETF and its active weekly (intermediate) trading channel. The SPY continues its slow and steady rise this year. The SPY remains clearly in an uptrend that began in February 2016 (green line).  Declines have been minor and brief. Until this trendline is broken, no serious threat of a major decline should occur.

The upside channel objective is 276.00 (orange line).  In the unlikely event the SPY falls below 245.00, the area where the SPY broke out of its range, this would turn the intermediate trend negative and imply potential weakness towards the middle channel at 210.00

The bottom half of the chart shows the Relative Strength Index, a measure of momentum developed by Welles Wilder. RSI is based on the ratio of upward price changes to downward price changes. RSI peaked at 76.04 confirmed the SPY price high.  RSI readings of 70 or higher show strength and are most times considered bullish, not a sign of a top. Generally, as long as RSI stays above 40, the trend is up.  The bullish uptrend in RSI from 1/16/16 remains intact.

On the other hand, RSI has lost some momentum.  It’s normal for momentum to weaken (red circle) after a large rally. Short-term weakness is perfectly normal after a large run-up in prices.  We should expect to see either a minor pullback or sideways consolidation before another rally attempt can occur.  If the SPY penetrates 258.00, just above the recent highs, the buyers will step in.

 In Sum

As long as the S&P 500 (SPY) uptrend remains in effect, SPY should work its way higher toward the upper weekly channel at 276.00.  If the downtrend is broken (green lines) on either price or RSI a warning sign would be given and caution would be recommended.  With our trading model likely to change from hold to the most bullish condition on November 1, and November and December historically a very favorable time for investment gains in equities, I recommend buying dips in the S&P 500 (SPY) as long as the SPY remains above 245.00.

Life is filled with twists and turns. Taking small actions toward what you want to achieve can create a new perspective on how you go about achieving your hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Have you or someone you’ve known ever challenged you to create goals beyond what you had imagined you could do? I know I have, and it’s made all the difference in my life! Goal setting is not rocket science but why go about it the same way over and over again? One of the best approaches I’m learning to help you succeed is to focus on improving your weaknesses so they become your strengths. You can do this by putting a plan in place that will keep things fresh and will help you feel renewed. Start by deciding that during this process of growth you are going to have fun, choose to be happy and do what your heart wants you to do. Life is short and can pass us by pretty fast so you want to take care of yourself and not spend too much time sweating the small stuff.

If you find yourself needing to pull yourself out of a funk, you can do so by changing your mindset and by shifting the language you use. It all starts with you accepting things for what they are.  Seeing life with all its ups and downs allows you to make better decisions about your plan of action. This small exercise will unlock your inner peace and is a great way to center your thoughts so you can begin finding the answers that will turn your weaknesses into new strengths, and also allow you to enjoy each day. 

When I started on my well-being journey I never imagined what an impact a change in perspective could be. The power to believe, added with simple consistent action steps has lead me to discover new strengths which had been hidden from my view.  The writing was never my strong point, math was. I didn’t even have to write a business letter in my corporate job, and my boss would put together the proposals to prospective clients so I didn’t get much practice. I do remember as a child that I did love writing letters to my teachers, friends, and family thanking them for their love and support.

As I grew life changed, I found other interests, that didn’t include writing.  A breakthrough appeared when one of my coaches gave me the assignment to write a poem. I wrote back to her expressing my apprehension with a big “Are You Kidding Me?” She wrote back and said, no she was not kidding and that I could do it. Yikes! I remember the fear and worry that filled my spirit. It was crazy that my coach had more belief I could write a poem than I did in myself. Instead of saying “I can’t” (one of my favorite answers before I started coaching), I dug deep and found the courage to move beyond my comfort zone and I started to write.  

Little did I know how much fun the process would be. It has opened up a new set of possibilities both personally and professionally. I learned when you find the courage to do something and continue to do it you gain a sense of confidence that spills over into all areas of your life. When I grow hesitant about trying something beyond my comfort zone, I do my best to remember back how fear used to fill me and how the flood of overwhelm would be so strong it would leave me paralyzed. Then I remind myself how I overcame all of that by finding the courage within myself to push through. This is something that has helped me time and time again. We all need a bit of encouragement and to help you make the shift take a moment and read my poem The Power of Inner Peace is Within Reach. My hope is you will realize all you can accomplish by changing your old way of thinking so you will explore new opportunities.

Putting myself out there in such a way was quite a challenge, especially since I knew that writing was not a strength I possessed. It was five years ago when I wrote that poem and had the courage to share on my blog. It taught me a valuable lesson in trusting myself and in the process of cultivating my untapped abilities. It goes to show you the power of how one thing can lead into another so that you can grow into who you are meant to be. Which, by the way, later on, another seed was planted by my mentor, when she said to me “you have a book in you.”  What? Writing a poem was such stretch that I laughed at the idea of writing a book. It was only with the support of my coach and working on having a positive mindset that I was able to discover that there really was a book in me when I published “Journey to Wealth”.  It took time and plenty of revisions but I’m proud to say it’s published and available on Amazon. Who knew? I didn’t, that’s for sure! Don’t doubt yourself. Your thoughts and perspective make a huge difference in what you do, Unlock the strength inside of you and take the steps needed so you can move forward today with a healthy outlook. 

How to Turn Your Weaknesses into Strengths

  1. Realize the impact of attitude on life. Raise your awareness to what your weakness might be and accept them, instead of going to the place of frustration.
  2. Ask someone you can trust for help that has done what you want to do.
  3. Start with doing one simple step. Practice to gain confidence and get better and better each day.
  4. Don’t take criticism or feedback personally. Not everyone is going to like what you do. Ask yourself what you can learn from the feedback that has been given to you.
  5. Change your thought process to think solutions. Focus on how to fix the problem, not on the obstacle. Don’t stay in a place of anger and keep focusing on what is negative, focus on what is positive
  6. Believe in Yourself. You are ready for unexpected challenges that arise. Think back to those challenges you already have handled in your life.
  7. Learn from your past mistakes, don’t beat yourself up, press on.

Start today by doing something you have never done before. The time has come for you to break through your challenges and gain a new perspective that will empower your new way of thinking. Do this by creating a plan and make it simple enough for you to follow. Revise as needed so you will stick with it. When you put in the effort to master a new skill, you will become excited again. The energy and revitalization you feel inside as you chart a new course in your life will become the foundation that will enable you to do even more. An opportunity exists at every turn. Take advantage of it. Create change in your life with small actions steps that move you closer to increased wealth and well-being. Living inside your comfort zone is not a good option if you want to find the fulfilled happiness you deserve. When you start to turn your weaknesses into strengths there are brighter days ahead so you can experience all richness life has to offer.

It’s time to visualize your success, have positive thoughts and be who you desire to be.  Have you asked the question where will you be five years from now? Please don’t ever let anybody tell you that YOU can’t do something. You can do anything you set your mind to. A great reminder to myself too!

Realize failure is part of success and understand mistakes will happen. To be a winner you don’t want to be overly scared to lose. This is a hard lesson to have to learn and I’m still grasping this concept as well. Decide now YOU will feel great when you go out of your comfort zone. Be gentle with yourself. Know you will rise to the occasion and successfully meet the challenge. Go for it, and act on your dreams! Keep your dreams alive and dream big.

Take a small step forward each day and share your wisdom with others. Be kind to yourself.  You don’t need to know all your answers in advance. Focus on what you desire just as if it’s yours NOW! Be YOU!  Be the best and don’t settle for less.

Begin today by surrounding yourself with others who support you and are positive and avoid the people who give off negative energy and put you down.

Once you find the courage to begin, you’ll find the courage to succeed.  If you do happen to fail, pick yourself up and keep trying. Choose the path to move forward, no matter what other people think. What are your thinking about? Don’t quit. Choose to persevere!

Manage your emotions, don’t let emotions manage you. Emotions are powerful and build momentum so use them to your advantage. Emotions are our friends and should always be listened to for they hold the key to our soul. There are times we can feel fragile with so many obstacles and challenges that come our way. You must  decide to push through no matter how it gets. The power to overcome is within YOU! Dig deep, learn the lesson, and find the positive from the challenge. When you do you find that you are a much stronger person.

Practice positive self talk and be aware of your words you speak to yourself. This was a tremendous lesson for me to learn because of the effect words can have on you and your life. For example, when I say the phrase “Easier said than done”; my coach would say “EASIER DONE THAN SAID”.  Now sit back, be still and think about how to respond to your emotions instead of reacting to them. After you do this simple exercise you will begin to feel the difference and have placed yourself on trek to living a better life. The time has arrived for you to allow the power of words to move you closer to all that you dream of and desire.

Did you get caught in the 2008 stock market meltdown? I have friends and family who have suffered losses that have been close to almost impossible to recoup. Look around and you will discover countless Americans finding it difficult to regroup after such a devastating loss and now realize that there just may not be enough income for retirement and a result are having, like many, to delay their retirement because the numbers don’t support their planned early to mid 60’s retirement plan.

You may be too young now, but I bet you know someone who is living this very scenario and are now finding that working hard, saving and planning just wasn’t enough. This dose of reality can be devistating if this is you or someone you love but did you know that working longer has a variety of benefits as well? All it takes is making a lifestyle change now and putting a plan in place that will pay dividends moving forward.  With the tips I share below you feel confident that you have full control in navigating the waters ahead while keeping your dreams and lifestyle afloat through the calm or rough seas.

5 Good Reasons to Delay Your Retirement:

More time to save for your future.  The years before you retire can be some of the best years to save because you’ll earn more than you did earlier in your career.  Once children become financially independent, parent’s expenses are less and are in position to increase their retirement savings.

Fewer retirement years to fund your investment If you monitor your health and well being you will live longer and can expect to have 20 or even 30 years in retirement. If you put off retirement there will be fewer years without income from work so you will not have to withdraw money. It is a good idea if you look for a part-time job that you are passionate about in retirement that can allow you to draw down your savings at a slower rate

Delay taxes as long as you can.  Withdrawals from traditional 401(k)s generally become required after age 70½.  For more details visit @

Receive Higher Social Security checks. After you apply for Social Security, you will receive a monthly check for the rest of your life.  The size of that check is depends on how much you’ve paid into the system and when you start taking it. The longer you are able to wait, the higher your monthly benefits will be. Your Social Security payments that you are entitled to will increase for each year you delay signing up between ages 62 and 70. Health Benefits. Workers are not able to sign up for Medicare until age 65. Finding individual health-insurance coverage that is affordable if you qualify is quite a challenge. It can be extremely difficult for people who lose group coverage that was provided by an employer. Keeping your job or having a part-time job with benefits is the most cost-effective way to find health insurance before age 65.

Addtional thoughts:

  • feelings of peaceYou literally have more money in your pocket. This is because you need less money for current expenses compared to when you were supporting your children or paying off your house.
  • No need to work so hard any more. If you can find a part-time job, three days a week or six months a year  doing something completely different you can be happier. If you put in 20 hours per week, delaying retirement doesn’t sound so bad.
  • More time for you. Be active, learn and do new things.  Be bold, brave and daring while having fun and enjoying the steps and stages experienced during this phase in life. It will help you feel young and reborn.
  • Keep yourself moving and your mind in tip top shape. Commit to work work only a few days a week to stimulate your mind and empowered in doing what your heart is calling you do. If possible, it is ideal that your new vocation be more than the paycheck. It should be something you have longed to do and learn more about. When this is the case money becomes secondary.
  • Use your new found freedom to give something back. If you would rather not work at a job then use your wisdom, talent and skills helping others grow and develop into their own full potential. You’ve spent years honing you craft. Perhaps it’s time to leave a life legacy for your children to pass on to the next generation through leading by example. This will pay higher dividend than any money investment.

Hopefully you’re ready to give some thought to the idea of delaying your own retirement. There are so many good reasons to still be in the game. Plan now to work in what you love until you can work no more. It will keep you engaged, young and vibrant.
