Simple Ways to Relax and Enjoy Your Vacation

All work and no play isn’t fun or good for your well-being. Time away from the office is beneficial for your total well-being, your mind, and body. When you take vacation time, new insights, thoughts, and ideas happen and your mind becomes clear. Time away also ignites your creativity and before you know it you are in an inspired flow that helps your mind focus easier and to become more productive upon your return.

It’s not easy to pull away. Especially if you are in go mode all the time. Tell me, when you do decide to go on vacation, do you ever feel overwhelmed by what you have to do before you leave?  When you are away, do you know how to relax, or are you the type of person who is stressed and worried so much that when you finally do take time away from your business or corporate job you aren’t able to enjoy it fully?

Many try to avoid these feelings by putting off much-needed downtime. Don’t take a vacation because you believe the time isn’t right (it never is) or that there’s too much to do. Well-timed breaks from the office have a tremendous impact on your productivity and your creativity.

These benefits add to your everyday happiness and your overall well-being. Don’t worry or allow thoughts of too much work or financial limitations keep you from taking time off. There is a workaround for everything. Even a few days off could make a big difference.  You don’t have to travel far, you can stay local and take advantage of attractions within your city. There are plenty of events you don’t have time to do while you’re working that would be perfect for renewing your spirit.  Once you make the time, you will be surprised to discover that time off is worth it.

What’s helped me to unplug fully during vacation is to develop a plan before going away. Unlike before, I now take full control of the process and am free to enjoy my time off leaving behind pre-vacation anxiety and stress. I struggled with this for years and can proudly say that I’ve mastered leaving those feelings behind since learning the importance of leaving a clear plan of action and to trust my coworkers. As a result, I’ve been able to relax while enjoying my time away and return feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Now that’s much better than not taking a vacation. If I can make it work… YOU can too.

This amazing photo is my reminder of what I experience when on vacation with my family and we see our friends on the island of Aruba. It’s only about 21 miles and is located in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea. The island may be small but because there are no distractions, it is the perfect place for us to unwind and has turned into our home away from home. My favorite place in Aruba is the Casa Del Mar Resort where my favorite lounge chair resides. I have many of them now.

If you do find yourself stressed and unable to break free then now is the time to embrace the idea that you can feel refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated while away and feel good upon your return. You can do so with the confidence of knowing all is well because you’ve taken the time to cover all the bases before you go on vacation.

Start planning early so you will be confident and not have to worry about your job or business while you are on vacation. Remember to also create a relationship with your team or an associate you can trust who will effectively manage your everyday tasks while you’re on vacation. Use the following tips to help you streamline your efforts and to assist you in making the necessary adjustments as seamless as possible.

Simple Ways to Relax and Enjoy Your Vacation

Prepare in Advance:

Make a list of important procedures, create a manual that has everyday routines as a point of reference including phone numbers and passwords and instructions. Devise a plan and go over with your team or associate before you go away on what you would like to happen if certain conditions occur.  In this way, you know you did all you could to have the same thing done as if you were making the decision while you are away and not in the office.  It is also a good idea to call your clients go over important matters with in advance of your vacation. Your clients really appreciate you being in touch with them, and you also don’t want them to take their business elsewhere.

Create a Way to Communicate with Your Office:

Most often it’s not necessary to take your business with you when you travel. However, you can bring a laptop, an iPad or a cell phone if you want to communicate if something comes up that could be important.

Nobody says to be day and night,on call and not enjoy your vacation. It might give you a sense of security as it does for me. When I travel, I monitor the stock market periodically through the day by listening to people talk around the pool or a quick look at CNBC on the TV. I mostly use email to communicate with my team, but I purchase an international cell phone if I need direct communication. Decide what an emergency is, and under what circumstances you want to be contacted while you’re on vacation. Be clear about your expectations.   Meet with the person who’s going to be backing you up and see what concerns she or he has.

Have a backup plan:

Start early to get what you need to be done. Keep your word, responsibility and your promises.  Send your files that you might need to your email address or open a Dropbox account for easy access.  If you are little more computer savvy, back up your files to a small flash drive which are very inexpensive, easy to use and convenient. With a flash drive, you can have a back up to your own files from your home or office computer for reference without an internet connection.

Take Care Of Your Own Personal Health:

Clear your mind. You are worth more to your clients, employees, and yourself when you rejuvenate, refresh, relax and have fun while on vacation.  Take a few days and step away from your daily habits and routines. You matter. Give yourself permission to take the time off to rejuvenate your brain, rest your body and enjoy new experiences.

Yes, it is possible to relax as you enjoy your vacation. Before you depart, decide and commit to the idea that you will relax, enjoy time with family and friends, and maintain a balanced lifestyle while on vacation.  Take time for you. Enjoy some peace and quiet so you can clear your mind. Your body will appreciate your healthy choices and you will also feel good inside and out. If you ask, you can find different activities committed to your well-being to take care of your body and feel great.  I state an intention there will be no lounge chair until I do some type of exercise. Exercise helps reduces stress as you burn calories, improve cardiovascular health, and improves circulation through your entire body.  Choose an activity that is fun. For example, there are great choices at Casa Del Mar, some are free and others don’t cost much money. I like the abs stretching class, water aerobics, chair yoga, walking on the beach or doing laps in the pool.

When you prepare in advance, create clear communication, have a backup plan and trust, you will achieve a relaxing worry-free vacation.
